To Aunty Shirley Edwin and Rangi & Steve Kearney Snr on the appointment of mokopuna and son to coach the New Zealand Rugby League Team. Stephen Kearney Jnr (pictured and Moko to many that know him) played 45 NZ tests from 1993 to 2004, he made 264 NRL appearances from 1992 to 2004, with Western Suburbs magpies, Auckland Warriors and also won a NRL Premiership with the Melbourne Storm in 1999. In 2006 & 2007 his success as Assistant coach to the Storm saw the team as finalists (20O7) and winners(2008) in the NRL competition.
I’m pretty sure a strong roopu from the Kapiti Coast will be heading over to Sydney for Moko’s first clash as Head Coach playing Australia in a Centenary Test in May,then the World Cup in October. We wish you all the best Moko, the whole of Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai will be behind you!! Kia Kaha

Another mokopuna for Rawhiti & Barbara Higgott - A baby girl born to their daughter on 11.2.08

Koro Don Te Maipi and his roopu Te kohanga reo o Tararua and the midget group Te Korowai Whakamana will be performing at the Mana Ariki National Kapa Haka Competitions on the 7th & 8th of March 2008, hopefully the Kohanga roopu will be bring back the trophy that they have held for the past 6 years – Good luck Koro!

Kahu Ropata & Tasha Hammond are tying the knot!! This is a mihi out to all whanau to attend and celebrate their special day with them. The wedding being held at Tatum Park, Levin on Saturday 8th March @ 11am – Nau Mai Haere Mai

HORA TE PAIKia ora ko Quentin tenei,

The physical activity and nutrition project began at a slow pace. The idea for this project had been planted several years ago and came to fruition in late 2007 with CCDHB giving us a funding contract. Six months on with lots of hard work from Hora Te Pai and clients we are seeing results. The results are very positive with some clients losing remarkable amounts of weight.

One of the first clients to join the Programme commented that his ‘weight was a health risk, not to mention the aches and pains that occurred because of my size’. At 160kg and 6’3 tall, life was a struggle. Twelve weeks into the 18 week Programme it was time for the client to be reassessed. He stepped onto the scales and he was shocked. I asked what was wrong. He said that can’t be right. I replied, lets take it again... 124kg!! That’s a 36kg loss, and he is more determined to become leaner and healthier.

The focus of the Programme is to work with clients at risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. It aims to provide the education and motivation for long term lifestyle changes to be achieved. It is not about weight loss, but this is the outcome for many.

At this stage the programme is only for Hora Te Pai GP clients but with the anticipated sustainable funding from the DHB we aim to open it up further.

Tena koutou te whanau o Whakarongotai
We are looking for 2 x young, keen minds who are able to make meaningful contributions on behalf of our iwi to both our local council (KCDC), and Greater Wellington Regional Council.
My late Uncle Pehi was instrumental in establishing Te Whakaminenga o Kapiti and Ara Tahi.  Both groups are iwi partnership groups who work with local authorities.  We have one representative already to both committees, Jack Rikihana.  It would be valuable for us to add another representative to each group.
Both Councils engage with iwi on a range of issues from residential and commercial developments, water (quality, metering, bores etc),  roads, resource consents, waahi tapu, coastal issues and transport to name a few areas.
Meetings ofAra TahiandTe Whakaminengaare held approximately every 6 weeks in KCDC Council Chambers and Greater Wellington's Council Chambers.
I am employed as Kaitakawaenga (Iwi Liaison by Greater Wellington) and Monica Fraser (nee Carter) is my equivalent at KCDC.
If you are interested in knowing more about these roles, please contact Kara at the Rūnanga office by email - admin@whakarongotai.com or 04 902 5208.
